Larry here with another "Listen to Larry" email. So far, we've cleaned up your disk and debunked your browsers, so today I'd like to share a tip that will help you properly finish the cleanup and improve your PC's speed. If you've been anywhere around computers for the last two decades, I bet you already know what I'm gonna say. If you guessed disk defragmentation, then you're as right as rain!

When you delete files or uninstall software during cleanup, there are chunks of free space left all over the drive. When new files are written to your hard drive, the system often uses these chunks that may be smaller than the new file. This causes the file to be broken up into pieces and written to different parts of your disk, which means reading the file will take longer than it should. This is why I like to complete every cleanup with a quick disk defrag.

Let me tell ya, Auslogics Disk Defrag has been around as a separate program for quite a few years and has become a favorite of many, many IT industry experts, PC technicians, and just regular "Ol' Joe" users around the world – just like you and me. 3. Click All Tools on the bottom panel and select Disk Defrag under Speed Improvement on the left.

4. Click LAUNCH to open the tool.

5. Select the drives you want defragmented (most likely the ones you cleaned up, and be sure to include your system drive – commonly C:/), then hit DEFRAG under the disks list. The tool will first analyze the selected drives to see if they need to be defragmented and then defrag only the drives that do.

6. Have fun watching the squares on the disk map move around and change color. If you get hooked on it, you can go to Settings – Cluster Map and select a different color scheme for the map every time you defrag. Ain't that cool? Some people (myself included) think it is. :)



That's it - you're done; that's really all you need to do. When the defrag is complete, you'll see the results right there in front of you that'll tell you the "before" and the "after" fragmentation percentage. Now, don't freak out if it doesn't get knocked down to zero. A fragmentation percentage of 3 to 5% is usually harmless (depending on what file is fragmented, of course) and won't make your computer run slow. There are actually some files that cannot be defragmented because there is not enough contiguous free space to store the whole file on, or they may be in use by the system while defragmentation is running.

Long story short - there are some files you don't need to worry about defraggin'.
